Mary Sleeping on the Gold Couch

Mary Sleeping on the Gold Couch
This is a statement I want to make about dementia. I hope it will be meaningful for the caretakers that have experienced similar situations. My wife Mary passed away from dementia in November 2023. This painting depicts my wife at the end of her life when she didn't know where she was, who I was and in her last days was prone to falling. She was sick for seven or more years with many health issues and when this painting was made she was blind and had the night before decided that the gold couch was her bed. I had previously moved my easel to the living room to be near her and in the morning I came out and started this painting. She fell shortly afterwards and within a moth she passed away. It took me six months to pick up the paint brushes but this is the final version.
