Big Wheels
Painted completely en plein air across three sessions in Gills Rock, WI during the 2023 Invitational Door County Plein Air Festival. I worked with traditional oils on a handmade oil primed canvas panel. I was drawn to this view because of the slathered receding shapes made by the parked trucks of a small fishing company. When I noticed that a small self portrait fit into the lower right corner of the drivers window I knew it would be a fun scene to paint from direct observation. The way the light reflected on the windows provided me with opportunities to push the shapes towards their abstract nature. The view towards the bay opened up a lot of space to explore atmospheric perspective during the morning to noon hours that I worked. The subtle warm notes in the painting made for a nuanced exploration of temperature and texture in my process. I appreciated the positive feedback the painting received from the fishermen of this company who allowed me to paint alongside their daily job responsibilities.
