The painting was inspired by personal experiences and pressures I faced to change my outlook, mainly my skin color to be more accepted and appealing to my ex-husband. This piece brings awareness to a wider practice of wide reaching implications in which segments of women, including me, felt or feel at times, immense pressure from historical distortions to change our skin appearance to satisfy deep seated and flawed 'norms' regarding appearance.
