The Darkness

The Darkness, Figure & Portrait
The Darkness
The Darkness is a mixed media piece that begins the Lost and Found series. Depicting my interpretation of depression and anxiety, feeling like nothing was going right and life was a ticking time bomb. The process of completing this piece was challenging but rewarding. The words represent negative labels, mindsets, or feelings that might have caused stress
within me, such as debt, responsibilities, narcissism, family, aggression, rape, molestation, and ownership, to name a few. My hair has always been my beauty, so the Darkness starts there and intertwines with the words. The right wrist has
Darkness around it, bounding it to slavery and oppression because even though it might not be as visible, it still affects my life. The reference for this painting was created at work during a stressful day. Even though on the outside I was happy, on the inside, I felt trapped, bound in my life, and alone. Capturing my face in such a distraught expression was the outlet I needed to search for a change and seek help.
