On a January day, I set up in Casper's Park near San Juan Capistrano, California, to paint the elegant white trunks of a grove of sycamore trees. I wanted to paint in the winter, with the leaves on the ground, so the trunks would be more visible. This painting was inspired by a Marion Wachtel mixed-media piece that incorporated pastel, watercolor and gouache.
