Me and My Peeps

Me and My Peeps
Have you ever felt that comforting presence, like a flock of birds watching over you, even in your most vulnerable moments? That's what inspired this piece. I was struck by a photo I took of myself—this mix of strength and guard in my posture. But it felt like something was missing. I thought of the birds I would see in my backyard and on nature walks. I would always pause to watch them as they went about their day or listen to their calls and songs. I thought they would be perfect companions on this journey.

decided to make a larger piece using toned paper. I selected Canson Colorline paper in cream and paired it with Prismacolor Premier and Faber-Castell Polychromos pencils. I began drawing without an initial sketch or a detailed plan. Using an app, I placed a grid on the reference photo on my phone and used two rulers to get started. If I got stuck or bored with one part, I would switch to another—hair, background, or sometimes take a break. I wanted to keep hold of the excitement and not get into my head too much. So, I planned as I went, keeping me focused on the art.

When people see this piece, I hope they feel a sense of strength and community—the connection I get from my feathered friends.
