The Shipwright's Apprentice

An interior of a Shipwright's workshop that was painted on location during a recent plein air competition. The painting depicts several vintage, classic boats in various stages of restoration or repair. It was designed so that the eye would be drawn to dramatic light on the middle ground boat with the cast shadows of mullions on it's hull. The strong curve of the foreground boat and other directional lines eventually lead the viewer to discover the figure on the stairs working on the boat in the background. He was pulling screws. I chose to have him dressed in dark clothing so as to camouflage him.
